Because I can?

Been spending way too much time trying to get Hulu+ to run on my tablet.  There’s an app on my phone that works fine, but for tablets?  Lots of steps to get it to work.

And then I realized that between Netflix (which I did get to work by adding the app on my tablet) and Amazon Prime Instant Video (which works brilliantly on the browser), why do I need to get Hulu+ to work?

Because I can.  Full instructions from fellow Android enthusiasts are online.

But as the old adage goes, just because you can do a thing doesn’t mean you should.

Hulu+ doesn’t really have anything that I can’t watch on the other two services, especially since they no longer seem to show USA Network episodes until about a month after it appears on TV.

Besides, I can watch all three on my Roku at home, Netflix and Amazon Instant have stuff that I would want to watch elsewhere.

Black Friday Deal+

I had canceled my initial order for Rock Band 3 before it was released.  I checked amazon.com today to see if perhaps it was on sale for Black Friday.  It appears that it was ($39.95).

I added it to my cart, and when I went to check out, I noticed a $20 credit to the price, which were from my original canceled order, AND my canceled order for the Kinect, two separate $10 credits for earlier video game purchases, applied only to future video game purchases.

Final price for Rock Band 3 (with Amazon Prime free shipping): $19.95.  Woohoo!

The Scott Pilgrim Blu Ray Story

I didn’t realize that the movie was released on disc this week until the day of release.  So I decided to order one from amazon.com, and since this was a short week at work, I paid the extra $3.99 for overnight delivery on Wednesday.

Wednesday came and went, so I emailed amazon.com and asked if I could get a refund on the overnight shipping, which they happily did.  I later checked on the status of the order, and it read “Undeliverable, damaged in shipping, return to shipper”.

Whut?

So I emailed them again and asked if they were going to send another, or did I need to place another order.

This morning I got a reply, and they apologized for the delay and the damaged item, and they would send me a replacement at no charge.  I thought, great, I don’t need to order another one.

What I didn’t know, until I read a follow up email from them, is that they meant ‘no charge’ as in they gave me a refund for both the shipping AND the Blu-Ray itself.

Free Scott Pilgrim Blu-Ray!

Wow.  That’s quality customer service right there.

Wha?

At Borders yesterday I saw a bunch of ‘The Walking Dead’ trade paperbacks, and was thinking of picking up the first one, before the series starts on AMCTV.  It was $9.99, so I figured that it might be cheaper at Amazon.

Amazon.com price: $9.99.

Guess I save on sales tax.

Pregame show on Comcast Sports Network was showing a couple of segments that brought back some memories:

  • It’s Jerry Garcia Night at the game, so they showed the Grateful Dead singing the National Anthem on Opening Day, April 12, 1993.  One thing I remember from before the game, was my brother and I looking at each other, and I think we grabbed each others shoulders, and he said something like, “I didn’t think we’d be here for this,” referring to the end of the 1992 season, when the Giants were all but moving to the St. Petersberg, Florida area.  The offseason saw Peter Magowan and a bunch of local businesspeople buy the Giants from Bob Lurie in order to keep them here in San Francisco, and then followed that up by signing free agent Barry Bonds.
I can’t remember what I said back to my brother, if anything, but I swear it was one of the happiest moments that we both shared.
  • They showed the weekly ‘Giants Wall of Fame’ segment, this time on Rod Beck, probably my favorite Giants pitcher not named Lincecum or Nen or Wilson.  He was the best, even at his worst, just because of his hair, his Fu Manchu beard, his arm swing, and mostly because of his awesome attitude whenever he pitched.  He had a pretty scary looking stare when he peered in at the batter.
I remember September 18th, 1997, and Beck coming in to face the Dodgers, my brother-in-law and I hoping that Beck could get out of a bases loaded, no outs situation, which he managed to do by striking out Todd Zeile and then getting ancient Eddie Murray to hit into a double play.  Sure, Brian Johnson was the hero that day with the home run that beat the Dodgers, but it was Rod Beck who stopped the Dodgers from breaking the tied game a couple of innings earlier.

    Rest in peace, Shooter.

Amazon, good and bad:

Good: thankfully I have a copy of Madden 11 on it’s way to me from them, so I don’t have to get my ass out of the house at midnight tonight to get a copy from GameStop or Best Buy.

Bad: they sent another, different order to me via OnTrac again.  Hope it actually gets to me tomorrow instead of Wednesday, like my ukulele.

Speaking of Madden, say what you will about the game, good or bad, but this game represents the true start of football season for me.  It’s been a must purchase game since the Sega Genesis days.

I don’t believe I’ve tried to play a full season since maybe the Playstation 1 days, even though I say that I want to.  Ever since the ‘Create a Player’ option was initiated, it’s been a tradition for me to create myself as the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos.  And it’s been quite a laugh ever since they added proportional body sizes and you see my little 5’6″ self getting mauled and flattened by a 300+ pound defensive linesman.

Bill Walton is a Grateful Dead fan.  Who knew.  He’s in the booth with Kruk and Kuip.
