Root

A question asked on Facebook:  how many teams do you root for?

I jokingly replied ‘two per sport; IT folks always have a backup.’  By default one of those teams is a local one.

Let’s do a tally.

Baseball:
Giants
Mets

Football:
Broncos
49ers

Hockey:
Sharks
Flyers

Basketball (kinda sorta):
Knicks
Warriors Lakers Bulls Raptors Cavaliers Michael Jordan
(admittedly, I used to root for basketball players, not teams)

Soccer
Tottenham Hotspur

Teams I have a passing interest in (mostly soccer):
Real Madrid (Zidane and Beckham were on the squad when I started following soccer)
San Jose Earthquakes (local team)
Seattle Sounders (mostly for their XBox 360 jerseys)

That makes 8 plus 3, so eleven teams that I root for.  And except for the two MLS teams, I have jerseys from the other 9 teams.

Manning

This is the most accurate Photoshop that I could find, since the Broncos announced that they would be going back to orange as their primary home jersey color.

As of this moment, Peyton Manning is finalizing a contract with the Denver Broncos, choosing my beloved team over my other beloved team, the San Francisco 49ers, and the Tennessee Titans.

Titans aside, this really puts things in a tizzy for both the Broncos and 49ers.

  • Tebowmania: If this were done last Thursday, Tim Tebow could have exclaimed “Et tu, Elway?”  As it stands, Tim Tebow is being kicked to the curb in Denver, with reports that the Broncos are looking to trade Tim Tebow.  No telling where he may go, possibly Miami or Tennessee, or even San Francisco, if Alex Smith doesn’t sign. Speaking of which…
  • Smith worked out for the Dolphins over the weekend, so who’s to say that he may just leave the 49ers hanging and sign with Miami?  There was a contract offer before Manningmania came to San Francisco, so he shouldn’t be too mad at the front office.  If he does leave, of course, it opens the door for Tim Tebow to become a 49er.
  • Jersey Curse: as much as I’d like to, I’m not going to get a Manning #18 (or #16?) Broncos jersey.  For those not in the know, almost every active player whose jersey or t-shirt that I’ve bought has had something negative happen to them, the latest being the Carlos Beltran #15 Giants t-shirt I picked up.  On that same day, he went on the disabled list.  Jerry Rice retired from the Broncos after I got his #19 jersey.  Tsuyoshi Shinjo.  John Bowker.  Al Iafrate.  Johan Santana.  It’s why I never got a TIm Lincecum jersey; Glenn has already told me he’d shoot me if I did.  Of course, he wanted me to get a Zito shirt a few years back…
Sidenote: I don’t think this is going to apply to my Jeremy Lin jersey, since I’m not a huge basketball fan.
  • Peyton Manning: Am I a fan of his?  Sure, always liked him over Eli.  I rooted for him in Super Bowl XLI and against him in Super Bowl XLIV.  He’s been in some funny commercials, and just seems like a good guy.
  • The Denver Broncos made it to the playoffs, and won a wild card game, with Tim Tebow as QB.  Imagine what could have been with a better QB.  Like Peyton Manning, for example.  Heh.

So yeah, I’m very happy about this turn of events.  I honestly didn’t think it was going to happen, but maybe if I listened to Denver sports radio instead of San Francisco sports radio, I would have thought differently.

LET’S GO BRONCOS!

In a nutshell

This was the most emotionally draining day for me, as a football fan, with the two teams that I follow playing, but not against each other.

Throughout the day I wore my Montana jersey, cheering the 49ers on with my family, and only my cousin’s girlfriend and I didn’t panic when the Saints took the lead twice in the final minutes of the game.  I’m sure my brother Rob felt the same way we did, that allowing them to score with 4 minutes left was plenty of time for the 49ers to come back, and again with less than 2 minutes, the Niners would again come back to win it.

This had to be one of the greatest 49er games I had ever watched.

Then came the Broncos game.

From the first scoring drive by the Patriots I could tell that this wasn’t going to be the same as last week’s game against the Steelers.  When it was 21-7 I knew that there would be no Tebow Time miracle, and that the Broncos team from weeks 15-17 was back.  I couldn’t look away, even when I got home from my aunts’ place.

I went from an emotional high to an emotional low in the span of about an hour.

Anyways, at least one of my teams will be in a championship game next week.  So much for the Super Bowl XXIV rematch that I was hoping for.

13-10

Proving me wrong for 6 weeks now.

I don’t dislike the guy, I’m just tired of the misguided media focus on him, when even Tim Tebow says that it’s a team effort that wins these games.  Though he’s succeeded in doing something that Kyle Orton, Jay Cutler, Jake Plummer and Brian Griese failed to do: inspire the team, and the fans.

No Denver Broncos quarterback has done that since John Elway.
