Upgrade

So I went and upgraded my phone:

Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch

On Sunday I got an email telling me that I was now eligible for an upgrade to my cell phone.

On Monday I did some online shopping and decided not to pull the trigger on an upgrade until I did a little more research.  Which I did on Tuesday, by browsing reviews online, and finally asking my sister about this phone, which she upgraded to from the same phone as my current one(HTC EVO 4G).

I considered waiting for Sprint to release the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, but one simple feature steered me toward this phone: a micro SD card slot.

The Nexus doesn’t come with one.  The Epic Touch does.

That may not seem like a big deal, considering the 16GB of storage on both phones, but with the Epic Touch, I can expand the memory by 32 GB.  And lack of space on my current phone is another reason I decided to upgrade.

I should be getting the new phone on Thursday, along with a couple of accessories that I ordered later in the day.  I stopped by Best Buy on the way home, where I couldn’t find a decent case for it.  They had invisibleShields in stock, but for almost twice as much as I’ve seen them on Amazon.com.

Stay tuned!

Mounted

Last year I bought a car mounting kit for my HTC EVO 4G, and it worked fine until about 2 weeks ago.

It simply stopped charging the phone while in the dock, though docked it displayed 100% charged.  A trip down to San Mateo later, I pulled the phone off the dock, and it displayed 71% charged.  WTH?

Browsing the web revealed that this seemed to happen a lot, so I decided to just get a simple car mount, and use the car charging cable that I originally picked up with the phone.  Today it came in:

Arkon SM410 Universal Windshield with Dashboard and Vent Mount

Dual docks!  EVO and iPod Touch (w/Sirius XM)

Side view, phone detatched (using the vent mount)

Close up

The mount appears to be very sturdy and stable, and the small ‘feet’ at the bottom are adjustable, allowing the charge cable to be attached without obstruction.

The windshield/dashboard mount seems too small (i.e. would be too far away) if I used it on my windshield, and the mounting disk may leave it too high in my field of vision.

So I think I’ll leave it on the vent.  A/C can also keep the phone cool, should there be any heat issues, which happens when using the GPS.

Sunday Night Randomness

The Broncos (3-9) have been officially eliminated from playoff contention with their loss to the Chiefs today.

<insert profanity filled tirade, ending with ‘MCDANIELS MUST GO!’, here>

At least they’re not the Bills or the Bengals.  Or the Lions.  Or the Panthers.

* * *

Meanwhile, the 49ers (4-8) still have a shot at the playoffs, if they run the table and the Rams and Seahawks falter in the next 4 weeks.  Not bloody likely, though.

The Niners lost to the Packers today, does this spell the end of Singletary as head coach?

* * *

Here I’m thinking that the Giants may have spent a little too much on Aubry Huff, and then the Nationals sign Jayson Werth to Barry Zito money.  Wow.

* * *

The Walking Dead finale seemed a bit anti-climatic.  No spoilers except to say that it was a good episode, just the very end was very ‘meh’.

Just downloaded an app called ‘Out of Milk’ for my EVO, it’s basically a shopping list app that can also keep inventory of the pantry, and keep a ‘To Do’ list for you.

Coolest thing is that I spoke into it to create the shopping list, and it even asked if I meant ‘dishwashing’ or ‘laundry’ when I said “detergent”.  Pretty neat.

Quoting my co-worker: what a world we live in.

Scooter expected tomorrow at work, which means I should drive in to bring it home.  Especially if it rains.

I considered taking it for a spin in our server room, but then Nels suggested that that would be a bad idea, because of my history of Bad Things Happening™ while I’m in there, like the Great Email Outage caused by my Elbow of Doom.

And with the bad weather expected this week, who knows when I’ll get a chance to test it outside.  *grumble*
