Weekend Recap

Saturday:

Waited for a contractor to replace my existing electrical meter with one of the new SmartMeters.  Once the guy got here, it only took less than 5 minutes to replace it.

Had the SyFy channel’s Indiana Jones movie marathon on in the background as the day went on.

Ran some errands, including a stop at Best Buy to look for possible accessories for the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, which I’ve nicknamed ‘TARDIS’.  I ended up picking up a tablet sleeve from Target, in TARDIS blue.

Sunday:

Caught the second half of the Brazil-USA Women’s World Cup match, which was probably one of the best soccer games I’ve ever seen, with Team USA getting screwed by the refs but eventually tying the game in extra time after extended time, and then winning on penalty kicks.

Before and after the game I watched the early Harry Potter films on ABC Family.  It’s been 10 years since this series started, and the main characters look so young.  And smaller.

I logged into City of Heroes and ran a task force with a bunch of regulars.  And that was all the gaming I did this weekend.  Amazingly I didn’t log into either Star Trek Online, where they’ve started the latest weekly mission series, nor DC Universe Online, my current favorite MMO.

I managed to configure the FastStone Image Viewer to work on my Ubuntu netbook through Wine.  Now I should be able to convert photos during Comic-Con more efficiently, and without lugging my laptop with me.

On both days I spent a lot of time familiarizing myself with my tablet, trying out applications, surfing, and reading comics/books.  I’m very happy with my purchase, as it will take the place of my netbook for my everyday online access.

Speaking of which, I also spent a good deal of time on Google+.  I’m watching various conversations, some in real time, about various subjects, from Wil Wheaton and his beer brewing to Guy Kawasaki trying to install a Chrome extension to allow G+ posts to propagate to Facebook and Twitter.  The latter is happening in real time as I type this, with the developer of the extension interacting with Guy and others to try to fix the issues with the extension.

As you may have noticed, the links for Mr. Wheaton and Mr. Kawasaki are ‘public’ posts in Google+, meaning anyone can read them, not just Google+ users.  It’s giving me the idea of possibly blogging there myself, with this blog disappearing or simply acting as a pointer for the G+ blog.

I also watched the Giants-Mets games, which have become hard for me to choose to root for one team against the other.  The Giants won the series 2-1.

And that was the weekend.

9th

Sunday was the 9th time I’ve seen Raiders of the Lost Ark in a theatre.  And it was just as glorious as the other 8 times.  This is one of those films that truly deserves to be shown on a big screen with a great sound system.

Speaking of which, I sat closer to the speakers for the first time in Lord knows how long, and what a difference it made.  You could feel the boulder rolling after Indy, the punches during the fights, and the finale was simply awesome with that much sound rocking your chair.

And the music!  The first time you hear the “Raiders March” over that sound system, as Indy makes his escape from the Hovitos, you’re almost taken back to the first time you heard that theme and somehow you knew that this movie was going to be different, this movie was going to be special.

I noticed this time around that the girl with ‘LOVE YOU’ written on her eyelids is mysteriously gone at the end of class, as Dr. Jones dismisses his students, reminding them to read Michaelson, chapters 4 & 5, for next time.  Odd that I never noticed this before.

One new thing that happened while watching, probably because I knew it was the 30th anniversary, and I was just so damn happy to be watching Raiders again on a big screen, was that although I knew I was smiling, I started to get all weepy the moment I saw Indy on the white horse, about to chase the truck.  Granted, it’s my favorite scene of the damn film, but I think it’s also because of the music, the atmosphere, the visuals, and the memories of 30 years ago, when I was first exposed to this movie.

I’m happy to say that I fell in love with this movie all over again, and it still ranks as number one on my all-time favorites list.

Happy 30th Anniversary, Raiders of the Lost Ark!  Here’s hoping that we see a Blu-Ray release soon, because I dislike the fact that Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is currently the only Indiana Jones film out on Blu-Ray.

Weekend

Saturday: Adventures in household hazardous materials disposal!

I found out that the sharps containers that I’ve been hoarding for years could be dropped off at Walgreens, or the nearby Waste Disposal Center.

I drove down with my dozen or so containers, in plastic bags, sitting on the floor in front of the passenger seat.  The old man at the gate asked what I was disposing of, and I told him ‘sharps containers’.  I don’t think he understood me, and told me to get in line with the rest of the cars that seemed to be loaded up with either garbage or recyclables.

As I sat in the car for over half an hour, I moved up the length of maybe four cars.  When I got past an orange cone, another dude walked up and asked what I was dropping off.  “Sharps containers.  Needles.”

“Ay nako!” he said, “you need to drive up there, boss.”

“Okay, thanks!”  And I headed up to another building, with a big sign that said ‘Household Hazardous Materials Disposal’.  Where there was no line.  Arrrgh.

I drove up, filled out a form, let a guy grab the stuff from the passenger side, and was done in less than 5 minutes.  Maybe less than 2 minutes.

So thanks for wasting over 30 minutes of my time, old guy who didn’t understand what I was dropping off!

Later I went back out and on impulse picked up the Rock Band 3 keyboard, mentioned in my last post.

Sunday: Soup, groceries and undiscovered books

It was another cold morning, so I went to Red Bowl (formerly HK) Noodle House and had a nice bowl of beef stew pho.

Afterwards I did some post-holiday grocery shopping.  This was followed by a stop at Borders, where I found a book that I’d never seen before:

At home, I started watching the end of the Ravens/Chiefs (HAHAHA) game.  I was going to watch the Packers/Eagles game, but discovered that SyFy was showing a Star Trek movie marathon today.  Color me shocked, none of those films contain a sharktopus nor a mansquito.

Saga

Yes, I’m aware that USA Network is showing the Indiana Jones Saga tonight.  First time all FOUR films are being shown consecutively on TV.

And yes, I’m watching.

Edit: dangit, it’s all four movies all weekend, they only showed Raiders and Temple of Doom tonight.  So I started watching Last Crusade on DVD.
