Weekend Recap

Saturday:

Waited for a contractor to replace my existing electrical meter with one of the new SmartMeters.  Once the guy got here, it only took less than 5 minutes to replace it.

Had the SyFy channel’s Indiana Jones movie marathon on in the background as the day went on.

Ran some errands, including a stop at Best Buy to look for possible accessories for the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, which I’ve nicknamed ‘TARDIS’.  I ended up picking up a tablet sleeve from Target, in TARDIS blue.

Sunday:

Caught the second half of the Brazil-USA Women’s World Cup match, which was probably one of the best soccer games I’ve ever seen, with Team USA getting screwed by the refs but eventually tying the game in extra time after extended time, and then winning on penalty kicks.

Before and after the game I watched the early Harry Potter films on ABC Family.  It’s been 10 years since this series started, and the main characters look so young.  And smaller.

I logged into City of Heroes and ran a task force with a bunch of regulars.  And that was all the gaming I did this weekend.  Amazingly I didn’t log into either Star Trek Online, where they’ve started the latest weekly mission series, nor DC Universe Online, my current favorite MMO.

I managed to configure the FastStone Image Viewer to work on my Ubuntu netbook through Wine.  Now I should be able to convert photos during Comic-Con more efficiently, and without lugging my laptop with me.

On both days I spent a lot of time familiarizing myself with my tablet, trying out applications, surfing, and reading comics/books.  I’m very happy with my purchase, as it will take the place of my netbook for my everyday online access.

Speaking of which, I also spent a good deal of time on Google+.  I’m watching various conversations, some in real time, about various subjects, from Wil Wheaton and his beer brewing to Guy Kawasaki trying to install a Chrome extension to allow G+ posts to propagate to Facebook and Twitter.  The latter is happening in real time as I type this, with the developer of the extension interacting with Guy and others to try to fix the issues with the extension.

As you may have noticed, the links for Mr. Wheaton and Mr. Kawasaki are ‘public’ posts in Google+, meaning anyone can read them, not just Google+ users.  It’s giving me the idea of possibly blogging there myself, with this blog disappearing or simply acting as a pointer for the G+ blog.

I also watched the Giants-Mets games, which have become hard for me to choose to root for one team against the other.  The Giants won the series 2-1.

And that was the weekend.

Non-DCUO Post

Or: random stuff is random.

Soccer: I watched the US-Spain friendly match, where the World Cup Champs showed why they were champs, winning 4-0.  Of course it didn’t help that 4 of USA’s regulars were not in the starting lineup.

And then Team USA goes and beats Canada 2-0 in the first game of the Gold Cup, with all the regulars playing.  Ah well.

I went to see X-Men First Class on Sunday, and I have to admit that it was a lot better than I expected it to be.  It’s one of the best superhero films that I’ve seen.  While it was quite different from the other X-films, and even the comics, the cast of characters felt familiar and not at all out of ‘character’.  Xavier and Magneto were great onscreen together, and there were a couple of cameos that really surprised me (“Go fuck yourselves.”).

Recommended, but you can wait for DVD.

Oh, look, the Giants are still in first place!

Though I have to admit that Tuesday night’s game was a bit… meh.  Nothing really exciting happened, and then the Giants lost.

And if that was a sellout crowd, they’ve changed the definition of a sellout crowd.

Weekend

Saturday: Morning errands, watched the UEFA Champions League final, won by Barcelona, magically watched Doctor Who, did laundry.

Sunday: Race Day 2011: woke up to watch the start and finish of the Grand Prix of Monaco (fell asleep after turning on the TV at 5am), got up to watch the Indianapolis 500, went to my aunt’s house for a family BBQ.

Monday: Visited cemetery to pay respects to my grandpa, a WWII veteran, finally played a game of APBA Soccer (Spurs 2 – 1 Arsenal), listened to some podcasts.

And that was my weekend.

Late Tuesday Randomness

Stayed home today after waking up with more of that dizziness and nausea from the Niaspan.  Ack.

Spent most of my day with DVDs running in the background as I attempted to reconstruct my iTunes library and try to separate the player cards in APBA Soccer.

I felt bad as I was separating the West Ham team cards, because they’ve been sent to relegation.

I managed to open the Green Lantern figures that I picked up and construct the Stel build-a-figure.

More pics here.

Thanks to picture in picture, I was able to watch both the Glee season finale and what turned out to be the Sharks’ season finale.

Random Monday

Health update:

My doctor started me on yet another medication, because my triglyceride  levels were high after my last blood test.  He warned me about one of the side effects (flushing) and I learned about the others by reading the little booklet that came with my prescription.

A couple of those side effects hit me square on this morning, and I almost just stayed home until the nausea and dizziness went away.

I’m also watching out for a possible gout flare up, because the medication apparently raises uric acid, and the doc says that my uric acid level is low due to the allopurinol that I’ve been taking.

I feel like a walking chemistry experiment.

Too busy to read/finish The Hunger Games this weekend, but after flipping through the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, one chapter that I read was more heartbreaking after seeing some of the cast, and putting faces to the characters.  I just wonder how graphic the movie is going to be compared to the book.

iTunes has been very uncooperative with rebuilding my music library on my new computer.  But I think I finally got everything back, and deleted a bunch of stuff that hardly got any play time.

* * *

Something else I failed to do this weekend was learn how to play APBA Soccer.  I got through most of the rulebook, and I still need to punch out the EPL cards so I can play Tottenham vs. Arsenal.

Sharks: It’s over.  See you next season.

Giants: Torture is back.  With a nice dose of cardiac arrest.
