{"id":2627,"date":"2018-01-06T10:56:47","date_gmt":"2018-01-06T18:56:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/?p=2627"},"modified":"2018-01-06T10:56:47","modified_gmt":"2018-01-06T18:56:47","slug":"john-young","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/john-young\/","title":{"rendered":"John Young"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was 14 when Space Shuttle <em>Columbia<\/em> first flew.\u00a0 It was the first space mission that I followed from beginning to end.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2628\" src=\"http:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sts_1_patch.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sts_1_patch.jpg 800w, https:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sts_1_patch-276x300.jpg 276w, https:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sts_1_patch-768x835.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I got up early the morning of April 12, 1981 and whispered &#8216;godspeed&#8217; as she began her ascent into the sky.\u00a0 I have no memory of any of the Apollo launches as I was only 5 when they stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, I watched in awe as a spacecraft landed safely back to Earth, to be used again in a later mission.<\/p>\n<p>And then out came these two people:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2629\" src=\"http:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sts1crew.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"626\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sts1crew.jpg 626w, https:\/\/saguisag.com\/blogv4\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/sts1crew-300x238.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 626px) 100vw, 626px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Astronauts in general were always my heroes, but these two were the first to fly the ship that I&#8217;ve always considered <em>my<\/em> shuttle, <em>Columbia<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Shuttle commander John Young and Shuttle pilot Robert Crippen.<\/p>\n<p>Today we lost one of them.<\/p>\n<p>As usual these days, I found out via Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>As usual I find myself feeling older, as the icons of my life die.<\/p>\n<p>Godspeed, John Young.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I was 14 when Space Shuttle Columbia first flew.\u00a0 It was the first space mission that I followed from beginning to end.
