Earlier this week I received a copy of the Battlestar Galactica Starship Battles game.
I’ve been a fan of the original series since it’s premiere.
The reimaged series took a while for me to warm up to, because the storyline seemed so bleak from the start, but once I started watching regularly, I really got into it.
I’m one of the few people who I know who liked the finale.
Anyways, about the game.
It’s basically a table top miniatures game, similar to X-Wing or Attack Wing, but with different elements, mostly in movement.
It’s still a ‘move-shoot-damage’ game, just like the many I’ve played in the past. But the ‘move’ part is unlike any I’ve played, and simulates what you see onscreen in an episode of Battlestar Galactica with space combat. The ships rotate while moving along the same vector, with guns coming to bear as you slide by your opponent.
Damage can be null or devastating, depending on the draw from the damage counters, and the damage is hidden from your opponent until you explode.
The components are very nice.
These control panels were colored by myself; they actually come in a lighter, plain grey color:
The game comes with 2 Colonial MkII Vipers and 2 Cylon Raiders.
The detail on the miniatures themselves is insane.
I played a test run with one Cylon Raider vs. one Colonial Viper, using the Quick Play rules.
Thy moved toward each other, closed to short range, and the Viper was basically shredded by the Raider while the Raider suffered no damage. The Viper turned tail to run, but the Raider stayed on it’s tail, scoring non-essential hits as the Viper made it off the map.
I’m sure the outcome would be different if I had an actual opponent to play against.
Anyways, if you like miniatures games or Battlestar Galactica (or both) I highly recommend this game. Unlike X-Wing, it appears that you can play and perhaps collect other ships for this game without going bankrupt.
I mean, how many different ships can they possibly have, even if they include the original 1978 series?
Which they plan to do in 2019.
Transferring control to probe craft. Launch when ready.
I am SO looking forward to playing with the classic ships.
