It’s been a while.
Today I got a new game that I tried immediately when I got home, and I really like it.
I’m not a big horror film fan, but the Universal Studios Monsters have always been a favorite subject of mine. I’ve seen them all, with The Mummy as my favorite of these films.
Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein counts, right?
Anyways, the object of the game is to defeat 2-4 monsters, with 1-5 players/heroes.
I set up play with 3 heroes, so it wasn’t a true solo setup. The monsters were the suggested 1st play ones, Dracula and The Creature from the Black Lagoon.
Each turn consists of a Hero phase and then a Monster Phase, though this can be disrupted via perk cards. Heroes get a number of actions (move, collect items, share items, etc) and then the monsters draw a card from a deck, which may have special actions and may have them attacking heroes and villagers.
As the heroes are defeated (they return via the hospital) and villagers are attacked, the terror track goes up, and if it gets to the skull (7), the game ends.
If you run out of cards from the monster deck, the game ends.
In my game the terror track got to 4 but I managed to defeat both monsters.
Next time I play solo I’ll truly play solo, with only one hero under my control, instead of 3.
I’m looking forward to playing this one with my group, though we’ll probably wait until our October (Halloween) session to play it.
Recommended if you like co-op games, and classic monsters. Very thematic, and plays rather quickly. I think I was done in about an hour.
