Replay Baseball

I’m replaying Dwight Gooden’s rookie season in 1984, and I’m up to game #24 of his career: a road game vs. the San Francisco Giants, at Candlestick Park.

The opposing pitcher: Mike Krukow.

On this day, August 17, 1984, both pitchers went 9 innings, with no scoring.

In the top of the 10th, Krukow gave up a 2-run homer to Wally Backman, giving the Mets the lead.  Jesse Orosco pitched the bottom of the 10th for the save (his 26th), with Gooden winning his 11th game of the season.

Starting pitching lines:

Gooden: 9 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 12 K
Krukow: 9.1 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 10 K

I doubt my replay will turn out the same.  We’ll see.

Storage

Either I abandon the idea of having two sets of counters from 2 editions of this game, or I get another storage box.

More counters are coming, from a couple of expansions.  Hmmm.

Unboxing, Sorta…

Same sized box

Bigger rulebook, 96 pages vs. 166 pages

One sheet of counters is the same in both editions; the new edition has many more counters per sheet

I think I’m gonna need a bigger box for counters

The new rules no longer need these carrier group counters, so I’ll pack them away with the older 2000 set

Counters

From most of the posts on BoardGameGeek.com regarding Federation and Empire, having a second copy of the game is a good source of ship counters, which you’ll need plenty of, apparently.

There’s also a module for Vassel, for online play, so that’s a play option, too.

It’s just too bad that the two empires/races (Gorn/Romulan) that I most want to play are on opposing sides.  Though that might make for a good starting point for learning the game.

Crazy

That’s one word to describe me right now.

I was browsing BoardGameGeek.com, and came across some of the old Amarillo Design Bureau that we used to play, like Starfire, Star Fleet Battles and Federation and Empire.

For some reason I started reading more and more about the last one on that list, Federation and Empire, which we never got to play, back in the day or more recently when we played a couple of games of Federation Commander.

But my interest in tabletop wargames perked my interest in this grand scale Star Fleet Universe game, so I pulled out my set from 2000, and compared it to the specs for the 2010 set.

Basically, I would need to get an updated rulebook and 3 countersheets from ADB, which included a $14(!) shipping charge.

But checking eBay, I found a ‘ding n dent’ copy for about $3 more than just the parts, so I went and bought it.

The game should be arriving next week.  I’m gonna solo play this, if at all possible.

Packages

Monday I found one of those cards from the post office, telling me that they tried to deliver a package but they couldn’t and it would be held at the post office the next day, after 12 noon.

Tuesday I left work early in order to pick up the package, but they looked and said that it wasn’t dropped off yet, and to try back tomorrow.

Wednesday I left work early again to pick up the package, and again they couldn’t find it.  The postal worker game me a slip of paper with a phone number to call and to ask for the delivery manager.

Thursday I called and left a message with someone since the delivery manager was on another line, along with the tracking number.

I checked the tracking number, and all it said was that it was from Poland.

I have a pretty good idea what it is, a replacement miniature for a Kickstarter project/game.  I requested it and had it sent to my home address.  It was probably a small packet/envelope that may have been dropped or lost by the postman.

Friday I couldn’t seem to get a hold of anyone at that phone number, so I emailed the game people in Poland, explained what happened, and asked if they could sent another replacement to my work address.

Saturday I went back to the post office in the hope that maybe it was finally dropped off, but again it wasn’t.

This Monday I’ll try the phone number again, and maybe I’ll get lucky and they can find it, but in the mean time I’m hoping that the game people will send the replacement.  They never emailed me the first time around, so we’ll see what happens.

Baseball

My desire to play table top baseball appears to be directly influenced by how well the Giants and Mets are doing in real life.

Right now, both teams are below .500, with the Giants (38-63) dead last in the NL West, and the Mets (46-51) in 3rd place in the NL East.

Alas.
