2017-18 TV Schedule

Subject to change, naturally:

Tuesday

DC’s Legends of Tomorrow

Wednesday
Designated Survivor

Thurday
The Orville
Arrow

Friday
Agents of SHIELD

Shows I’ll probably check out:

Marvel’s Inhumans
Black Lightning

I don’t know about the new military-based/SEAL team wannabe shows, and there are a few.  Nothing else new looks interesting to me.

The Horror

Horror films: not a fan.

Never seen a Nightmare on Elm Street film.

Never seen a Friday the 13th film.

Never seen a Halloween film.

It.

The Shining.

Scream.

Never seen any of them.

Army of Darkness doesn’t count, even though it’s technically the 3rd film in a series.

Horror comics, on the other hand, are something that I’ve recently gotten into, thanks to folks like Dirk Manning, Kasey Pierce, and Dan Dougherty.

Not sure why I can read it, but not watch it.

And it’s not like I read horror novels, either.

Just comics.

It’s a change of pace from the usual Marvel/DC superhero books that I grew up with.

Go check ’em out!

Saturday

I started the day with an early screening of Dunkirk.

From the standpoint of a history and World War II enthusiast, it was a great story, well told.

From a film standpoint, it was a good movie.  I can see it getting nominated for awards, and Christopher Nolan may actually win an Oscar for directing.

But because my tastes differ from an Oscar voter, the movie was simply ‘good’.  Entertaining, compelling, but not a film for everyone.

3 stars out of 4.

So many trailers released for so many things that I’m waiting for.

Of them all, the Justice League and Thor: Ragnarok trailers were my favorite movie related ones (Ready Player One gets an honorable mention).

The TV ones were plentiful, with all the CW series and Star Trek Discovery shown.

So much to look forward to in the future.

The Panda’s back.

I don’t know how I feel about this, to be honest.  I believe in second chances, and this season is a wash, so what does it hurt?

Pablo Sandoval was young and made a dumb choice, like many young, dumb people do.

We’ll see what happens.

SDCC 2017

Truth be told, I do miss going.

I just don’t miss the planning, travel, lines, and crowds.

The smaller cons around here take care of that itch to attend a con.  I just miss seeing folks I know who go to SDCC.

Latest Dive Into the Past

Old sci-fi films that I never watched for $100, Alex.

The ship design is familiar, and one that I’ve always liked.  Even though I grew up during the time of the Starship Enterprise, the Alphan Eagles, and the Millennium Falcon, the sleek, simple shape of a rocketship is what classic science fiction is all about.

Sadly, I couldn’t find this movie streaming on the usual sites, so I went looking for a disc version.  I managed to find a copy on ebay, at a reasonable price, and should have it in a week or so.

I found this on Amazon as well:

It’s my next project, as soon as it comes in.

Who!

A while back, when they first announced that Peter Capaldi was leaving Doctor Who, and speculation began on his successor (i.e. the 13th Doctor), there was the usual talk of an actress taking over the role.

Talk like that has gone on for as far back as I could remember, even before I watched the series.

When Tom Baker was leaving the series, and the possibility of a woman taking over the role, Starlog Magazine got blasted for writing an article tiled ‘Nurse Who?’ implying that a woman can only be a nurse.

Sadly I’d recently seen the same comments, and worse, from people on Twitter.

Anyways, one of the first women who I thought of for the role was Jodie Whittaker, since she had worked with incoming showrunner Chris Chibnall on Broadchurch.

I put that thought aside, until this weekend, when the frontrunners for the role were Kris Marshall, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Tilda Swinton… and Jodie Whittaker.

So I jokingly said on Facebook that I’d be okay with Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor, since she’d fought aliens before, in Attack the Block.

I got up this morning to watch the announcement after the Wimbledon Men’s Final, and was surprised to see this:

For the second straight time, my suggestion for the Doctor’s replacement was been picked.  I said that Peter Capaldi would make a great Doctor, days before the official announcement.

Welcome aboard the TARDIS, Jodie Whittaker!

Homecoming Review

My favorite Spider-Man movie.

Your mileage may vary.

Within the first few minutes, my jaw dropped.  I almost screamed.

No, I can’t say why.  Once you see the movie, you’ll understand, if you know me.

The little things, like Mets stuff in Peter’s room, the music, the nods to the rest of the MCU, made this movie so personal to me.

My spirit animal in this movie is Ned.  I’d be him in this story, but much skinnier, like I was in high school.

And it really did feel like an ’80s high school film, John Hughes-style.

Go see it!  Eight thumbs up!
