If you’ve read DC Comics in the past 26 years, you’re aware of the Death of Superman storyline.
It’s a classic. One of my favorite stories to pick up and read over again.
It was one of the few times that I cried over a comic book story.
Yeah, they killed Superman. But you knew he’d be back. It just took over a year for him to return in the comics.
This year, DC/WB Animation came out with an adaptation of this story, and it’s far better than I expected.
For starters, as much as I like the Justice League from that era, with Blue Beetle and Booster Gold and Guy Gardner, this movie had what I consider the REAL Justice League.
They also added dialogue directly from the comic, AND from other sources, namely, Superman: The Movie.
And even though I know how this story ends, and what’s to come, it hit me with the same impact as the original comic, and made me cry, again.
It’s entirely possible that I’m still an emotional mess since my Dad passed away, and this movie is another outlet for me to grieve.
Especially since I once thought that my Dad was Superman.
He had the same glasses as Clark Kent, so at age 5 I put two and two together, y’see.
I can’t recommend this movie enough. 4 stars out of 4 for me.
And watch through the credits for hints of what comes next.
