1921

Now that Digital Diamond Baseball has added the 1921 season to the game, I can pretty much stop using BallScore/BallStat for my scorekeeping app.

The question now is do I continue from where I left off, like I did with the 1971 replay that started with BallScore, or do I scrap the sixty-three 1921 season games I played and start over?

2024: #LFGM Game 1

Opening Day, delayed by a day

Final from Citi Field:

In the 9th inning I went online and played Edwin Diaz’ entrance music.

It felt good to play this particular game system, it brought me back to almost 40 years ago when I replayed the 1988 Mets season.

Here’s hoping I can actually complete this one in a reasonable amount of time.

First Impressions, Revisited

I have missed playing this game.

I separated the team cards and skimmed the rules over the weekend.

Early Tuesday morning I set up the game and fired up Digital Diamond Baseball and chose Opening Day for the Mets (rain delayed from the day before, Brewers @ Mets).

I took the dice and paused for a moment before rolling, relishing the return of the the game engine that I played out my first season replay back in 1989.

I proceeded to play through the first inning, referring back to the rulebook and charts, and it felt like riding a bike as I got back into the flow of the game, it was so familiar.

And then…

Francisco Lindor steps up to the plate, the roll came up as a Deep Drive from Freddy Peralta’s (pitcher) card.

Check the direction of the hit, check the wind, roll on the wall chart, and it’s

a home run to the Coca-Cola Porch.

I forgot how much I love how descriptive this game gets.

After 1 inning, Mets up 1-0

I’ll finish up the game tonight.

MLB 2024

The first replay, nay, the first replay GAME that I ever bought was 1989’s Pursue the Pennant.

It came with the 1988 season, which I replayed the New York Mets’ season in it’s entirety, all the way through the 1988 NLCS between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Mets.

Over the years I bought every season that they produced, including an old time set with sepia-tone stadium inserts.

I believe the last set made was the 1994 season and the game became Dynasty League Baseball, which I believe I did pick up, along with the 1995 season.

Except for a few old-time card games, I never did play with any of the other seasons after collecting them all.

In 2012 I started playing Strat-O-Matic, among other baseball games, leaving Pursue the Pennant/Dynasty League behind.

While I kept the core boxes for both games, I believe all of the season sets have been lost in the move out from the house last year.

Flash forward to this year, where I recalled that the Dodgers and Mets again played in the previous season’s NLCS, and I pulled the trigger and picked up the 40th anniversary edition of Pursue the Pennant/Dynasty League, with the intention of replaying the 2024 New York Mets season, much as I did back in 1989.

Final score:

Chicago Packers 111
Syracuse Nationals 85

It took me a couple of days to finish a game, only because of finding the free time to do so, all told, I can probably finish off a game in 90 minutes to 2 hours.

I do need to pay attention to what stats I want to track, and I need to remember to actually sub out starters with bench players.

The game comes with 2 boards, one for 5 players per team, one for 10 players for team, the latter is supposed to allow for those to players to generated stats, the former requires you to keep track of minutes played and manually swap out players.  The 10 per team board is what I used , and maybe 2 ‘bench’ players had generated any shots or fouls.

I do like how this game plays more than any other basketball game that I’ve tried, though it’s a small sample, and only a couple of games played in any other system.

I’ll probably even replay this match up just to get the stats/players right.

Wayne Montana wins his 5th race of the year.

Current standings:

Rossi’s DNQ allows Parnell Drake to grab the points lead with his top 10 finish.

Next: the Daily Double Duel at OP @ Ocean Pacific International.

EXTREME HOCKEY?

One of the latest offerings from PLAAY Games is their new XHL hockey league for Hockey Blast.

Described as “an alternate, summertime big-time professional hockey league”, the set comes with 20 teams, and as I have enough trouble trying to find time to play most sports games, I’ve decided to try this set with only 6 teams, representing the NHL’s Original Six.

The 6 teams are from Chicago, Cleveland, Hartford, New York, Quebec, and Toronto.

There were no teams from Boston or Detroit, so I picked the closest teams city-wise (Cleveland and Hartford)

The have a list of suggested team names, with a classic/heritage name and an alternate name.  My initial thoughts for names for this XHL 6 league (from the suggestions):

  • Chicago Bruisers
  • Cleveland Barons
  • Hartford Whalers (think I’d pick this city and not use their classic team name?)
  • New York Gladiators
  • Quebec Nordiques (same here)
  • Toronto Shamrocks

There are some alternate rules that can be added (2 point goals, option to pull the penalized team goalie during a major penalty) that I’ll probably end up trying.

They also included 32 actual NHL players to add to the teams as free agents, which I may or may not do.

I’ll try to get a game or two in soon, as soon as I work out a schedule for the league.
