Race! Formula 90

I pulled another racing game out of storage.

This was a Kickstarter from a couple of years ago.  The oddest part of the reward was the painted metal cars add-on.

Nice cars, but the main player color cars are orange, red, white, black, blue, and purple.

The game adds extra AI cars in black (2, superfast), yellow (3, fast) and purple (3, slow), so it’s odd that a couple of player colors are also AI colors.

But looking at the painted metal cars set, there’s no blue or orange, two pairs of white/light grey, and green, which are neither a player or AI car color.

Plus the fact that the non-AI cars come in pairs, when all you’re running is a single car in this game, not a team of 2, is odd.

I went ahead and 3D printed some replacement cars (based on an upscaled file for a Formula D car) plus a bunch of 1964-era F1 cars in the approximate scale/size.

Plus I ordered a half dozen metal cars to use from Eureka Miniatures.

First car is from the first edition of Race! Formula 90, second car is the plastic one from the 2nd edition, 3rd is a painted car from Eureka Miniatures.

I’ll be painting the metal ones from Eureka Miniatures in the 6 appropriate colors.  I may have to look into paint schemes from the 1980s-90s for these cars, because of their styling (there’s a small air intake above the cockpit).

Classic F1

I have two versions of this game, one that I acquired and printed out in 2015, and an updated version that’s been sitting on my hard drive since late 2020.

I think it’s about time that I sat down and learned this one.

This is a lap-by-lap recreation of F1 races, and the most recent set that I picked up has all the world champions up to 2019, and the 2019 season set.

Other seasons that I have are 1981, 1988, and 2016, and a variety of historical tracks.

I may just take 20 championship drivers and 20 or so tracks and run a season, if I decide not to replay one of the seasons I have.

1962: Formula 1

As much as I enjoyed playing Lacorsa, I felt the pull back to the first Formula 1 racing game I played.  But I wanted to stick to the same era as Lacorsa.

Behold, Shapeways with the solution!

These are 4 of the teams/cars that competed in the 1962 Formula 1 Grand Prix season.  Left to right:

  • Porsche 804
  • BRM P57
  • Ferrari 156 “Sharknose”
  • Lotus 25

I’ll paint them up in proper team colors and use the Formula DE boardgame to play out the season.

The teams/drivers:

Racing, Again

Yet another racing game is about to come into my possession.  Lacorsa.

It’s a card and dice game with race car pawns.  It looks cool.  And I already set up a season to play.

Only 6 cars get to participate in a race, so I have to figure out how to incorporate 2 more cars, or some kind of qualifying method that disallows 2 cars from each race.

I’ll have it all figured out before I get the game.

Stay tuned!
