Past vs. Present

In my baseball projects, I find that I have little or no interest in playing any season past 1990, except for the Giants’ postseason campaigns when they won the World Series.

Though my fictional baseball leagues are based in more recent years (2016-).

As for football, I’m content playing the 1967 Denver Broncos season, dabbling a bit in the 1958 NFL season.  I own the 2015 season only because of the Broncos Super Bowl championship, the majority of the other seasons that I own are pre-1990 as well.

I’ve had the itch to play football lately, but my disillusionment with the current NFL has stopped me from starting a new project with more recent teams and seasons.

The fictional league that I played with Pen & Paper Football was fun, but that was more of a quick-play game.

So I may go back to a project that I started to put together back in 2014: the Football Clubs of America league, using the 2014 Football America fictional league from PLAAY Games.

I went as far as renaming the teams and creating a schedule, so I may start from there again and maybe play a game occasionally.

The teams:

National Conference
Golden Bay Invaders
Los Angeles Bulldogs
New York Knights
Oklahoma City Wranglers
Portland Storm
San Antonio Riders

American Conference
Chicago Winds
Detroit Wheels
Memphis Hound Dogs
New Jersey Generals
Orlando Renegades
Philadelphia Bell

16-week schedule, no byes, teams play conference opponents twice and non-conference opponents once, top conference teams meet in the Championship Game.

We’ll see if I ever get this project started or not.

Stay tuned!

Edit: my mistake, it’s actually the Football America 2013 season.

2018: Galactic Football League

Browsing the Delphi Table Top Sports forums is always a dangerous thing to do.  More times than not I find a new game to try, based on the experiences of the people in the forums.

Today, the game that I discovered is Pen & Paper Football, which is found on DriveThruRPG.com, of all places.

Price: $1.99, PDF format.  All you need besides pen/pencil and paper are a few d6s, a d10, and a d20.

You can play it in league mode (quick play, solitaire) or head-to-head play, which is more involved.

You create the teams using a few die rolls, which gives you basic stats.  In between seasons you can try to expand your fanbase, so there’s a bit of team management involved, including expanding into other markets, signing new talent, and avoiding moving your team or even shutting it all down.  You can even expand the league itself.

League play involves 8 die rolls per game, each representing how many points a team scores in a quarter, modified by the offensive and defensive of the two teams.

Head-to-head play is play-by-play, I haven’t gone over the rules for that mode yet.

I started a 6-team league, and played the first 5 weeks of the season.

The current standings for the inaugural Galactic Football League:

The Tauntauns appear to be the team to beat, but the Porgs and Smugglers are right behind them in the overall league standings.

So far, I like this game.  It plays quick; you can probably knock off a season in a couple of hours.  I’ll try to finish this up tomorrow evening.

Stay tuned!  GO PORGS!

NFL/NCAA-F 2017

I just realized that I did not purchase the quick play football games that I usually get for the college bowl games, or the NFL playoffs.

I simply no longer have time (or interest?) to play those quick-play games.

I’d rather play full games of football, which currently take longer than the time I can invest into playing.

To be honest, I’m close to paring down the number of games (sports and others) that I currently own.

Yikes.

Mistakes, I’ve made a few…

Reading the rules for Techno Bowl revealed that I made a few errors when attempting to run the play as shown in the previous post.

There were more than a few die modifiers that I missed.

#77 should have tackled #7, not block him, as he chased him down field.

There’s some movement adjustments that were missed.

But at least I got the passing thing down!

I’ll try an actual game soon.

Stay tuned!

Techno Bowl: First Play Impresssions

I watched this video, skimmed the rules, and tried to play a set of downs this morning.

It plays VERY much like Blood Bowl, with a few rules changed or added.  And it’s a lot of fun, even solo.  The cards make solo play feasible.

This was the field of play when I setup the game last night:

And this is how it looked this morning, when I had to leave for work:

Yes, this is a custom playmat field that I picked up for my team.

On the left side, Bighorns #6 was knocked down by Reapers #41 in the endzone,  but before he did, he managed to complete a pass to Bighorns #7, on the right side of the field, who is being chased down by Reapers #77.

OMAHA!

I think I should just orient all the players so the numbers face me, like a video game.

My initial impression of this game is that I like it.

I’ll finish off this playthrough when I get home from work.

Stay tuned!
