1967: Maple Leafs Replay, Game 1

At last, a hockey replay is underway!

Final from Maple Leaf Gardens:

The penalties feature in this game is weird, in that there’s a letter assigned to a penalty, and all players with that letter get a penalty, but there’s only a single power play per ’round’ of penalties, if that makes sense.  It’s for statistical purposes.

You also assign the penalty type yourself, arbitrarily.

The game is simple enough, and plays fast, which nowadays is a feature that I favor.

Next up: Leafs go to Madison Square Garden for a rematch with the Rangers.

Shoot-Out Hockey

I bought this game in January 2020, printed out the rules, charts, and the 1967-68 team cards.

I meant to give it a whirl but then the pandemic hit and the game went unplayed and forgotten.

A week ago I was browsing the Delphi Table Top Sport Games forum and there was a topic about games that exceeded player’s expectations, and a few people were singing the virtues of Shoot-Out Hockey, so I checked it out online, and then checked my ‘Other Sports Games” folder and found the PDFs of the game,

I started printing out the rules but then remembered that I had already printed everything that I had ordered over a year ago.

I finally went over the rules earlier this week, and managed to play a game.  For a quick play (15 minutes) game, it’s got a lot of depth to it.

In a classic matchup of the Habs vs. Leafs, Montreal tied the game 2-2 late in the 3rd period and went on to win 3-2 in overtime.

Today I played Chicago vs. Detroit, and Stan Mikita scored the game-winning goal a couple of minutes after Gordie Howe scored the tying power play goal halfway into the 3rd period.  Final score: Hawks over Wings, 4-3.

This is a fun game.

I went and ordered a couple more seasons, 67-68 (expansion) and 93-94 (Sharks first winning year).

I may finally get my 1966-67 Toronto Maple Leafs replay started, along with 1967-68 Flyers and 1993-94 Sharks,

New Year, New In Progress Chart

Sure, let’s add the 1947 49ers replay, and put the 1967 Warriors replay back on the schedule.

Current

Around my workstation/table top play area are the following games, waiting to be played.

  • SSG Basketball
  • Net Results Soccer
  • Glory Days Boxing
  • Face to the Mat
  • B25 – Prince of the Skies

More hours in the day, or an extra day in the weekend.

I’ll get to all of them, along with the baseball and football and racing and hockey games.

In Progress, Revision to the Revised Revision of the Revision

The main change is putting the 1967 Warriors on hold, along with the 1988 Mets (revisited) replay.  I anticipate playing a soccer game with PSV soon, and hopefully starting basketball and hockey in the coming weeks.

Bah

While reading the rules for SSG Basketball I came to the realization that I didn’t want to have to print and cut out the game parts and FAC/timing deck.  I watched an unboxing video and saw that the printed/physical game came with the deck and plenty of other stuff, like additional dice for markers used during play.

So I went and ordered the physical game and 1990-91 season set, the same things I just bought as PDFs.

Call it a loss in the ‘try before you buy’ category.  The 1991 NBA Finals replay may turn into a full season replay with the Bulls or Warriors.

I’ve also decided that since I’m 2+ years out from my 50th birthday, my 1967 replays for basketball and (maybe) hockey are going to go on hold while I play other season replays that I’ve started.

Stay tuned!

In Progress, Revised Revision to the Revision

In Progress, Revised Revision

I’m having so much fun playing Net Results Soccer that I’ve decided to make it my primary soccer sim, and Soccer Blast my secondary.  The top three soccer replays listed are played with Net Results, the last one played with Soccer Blast.  Final Score and The Beautiful Game are being semi-permanently shelved.

The tables now reflect the priority that I place in playing these replays.  Baseball, soccer, and auto racing are my top played games.  I haven’t touched football in almost 3 years, and have yet to start basketball or hockey.

Baseball season sims (1917, 1921, 1971) are all Ball Park Baseball, short projects are played with History Maker Baseball (D’Acquisto ’74) and Inside Pitch (Gooden ’85).

Racing sims are all Red White & Blue Racing.

Football (Broncos ’67) is split between Inside Blitz and Second Season.  The Harbaugh ’90 project is played with Second Season.

Basketball (Warriors ’67) will be played with Inside the Paint.

Hockey will be played with Inside the Crease (Leafs ’67) and Hockey Blast (2014 quarter finals).
